Major Commodity Exchange Launches Sustainable Commodity Futures Contracts
CME Group and the London Metal Exchange are launching new physically-backed sustainable commodity futures contracts that allow buyers to differentiate between standard and certified-sustainable production.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — CME Group and the London Metal Exchange (LME) today made a joint announcement of new physically-backed sustainable commodity futures contracts that will allow market participants to trade standardised contracts that specify responsibly produced and certified copper, aluminium, and nickel.
The new Responsible Sourcing contracts, launching in the third quarter, will require physical delivery of metal certified under one of several internationally recognised responsible sourcing standards: the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI) framework, the London Metal Exchange's own Responsible Sourcing standard, or the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) standard.
"The launch of these contracts responds to a genuine and growing market need," said CME Group CEO Terry Duffy. "Major automotive and electronics manufacturers have committed to sourced materials that meet specific ESG criteria. These contracts provide the standardised, exchange-traded instrument that allows price discovery for responsibly-sourced metal and enables efficient procurement by industrial buyers."
Initial contract specifications include: copper (grade A quality, London Metal Exchange warrant, minimum RMI certification); aluminium (primary aluminium, Aluminium Stewardship Initiative certified); and nickel (class 1 nickel, Responsible Nickel Framework certified).
Market participants have until the contract launch date to register for initial trading, with physical delivery requiring presentation of responsible sourcing certificates alongside standard delivery documentation.
The market premium for responsibly sourced metal relative to standard grade is currently estimated at 2-5% across the contract specifications, reflecting the additional production costs and certification fees associated with responsible production standards.
