Spot container shipping rates declined 18% from recent peak levels as 2.1 million TEUs of new vessel capacity enters service. The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index fell to 2,847 from a high of 3,471. Rates on Asia-to-Europe fell 21% and Asia-to-North America fell 14%. For trading companies and importers, rates remain elevated relative to pre-2020 norms but represent meaningful relief. The outlook depends on Chinese demand and carrier capacity discipline as new supply continues entering service throughout the remainder of the year.
